The Discovery Center and Pier is a collaborative education facility whose nonprofit partners are dedicated to historic preservation and environmental stewardship of water-related resources. The campus includes the Discovery Center where the Maritime Heritage Alliance, the Children's Museum, Grand Traverse Watershed Initiative have facilities. Outside exhibits include an exhibit for youth titled "Ship Shapes" which includes a climb-aboard Mackinaw boat. Across M-22 on the bay, the Maritime Heritage Alliance displays the historic Gracie L, a Mackinaw Boat and the Schooner Madeline.
