Displays at the Cannery Boat Museum include commercial fishing tools and ice harvesting tools and equipment and and small craft. Commercial fishing gear includes a unique wooden fishing sled, net anchors, fish and net boxes. In the days before mechanical refrigeration, commercial fishnet harvested blocks of ice from local lakes and used it to preserve their catch on it way to market. They used the ice saws, plows, and spuds like those on display. The boats on display include The Searcher a 36' U.S. Lifesaving Service surfboat that was converted to a commercial fishing boat in the mid 20th century. The Cannery Boat Museum is part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. National Park Service visitor passes are required for admittance.
